Friends of Sutro Tunnel Seeks Community Input for Tourism Development Project
Dayton, NV – Friends of Sutro Tunnel, a non-profit group focused on the restoration of the historic Sutro Tunnel, have been selected in a competitive process by Travel Nevada to pursue a tourism planning project. This venture will help to preserve the Sutro Tunnel site, an important historic asset, while building the local tourism economy and supporting local history and heritage, culture, and outdoor recreation.
On Tuesday, February 4, at 6 p.m., the first of two 90-minute Community Sessions will take place at the Dayton Community Center (170 Pike Street, Dayton). Attendees will have the opportunity to have their voices heard, provide comments, and ask questions.

Friends of Sutro Tunnel’s concept centers on transforming the Historic Sutro Tunnel & Site into a fully operational historic park with guided, school, private, and self-guided tours as well as events, small-scale concerts, and site rentals. The planning process will also look for ways to build linkages between the site and other important Dayton and Comstock landmarks to build appeal for visitors, expand outdoor recreation around the community, and increase opportunities for small businesses to thrive.
The community is invited to attend this session to take part in this important planning process. The project is being guided by a local steering committee including historians, museum staff, city/county/state officials, members of the business community, and tourism professionals. The project advances Travel Nevada's focus on destination development to expand the state's tourism infrastructure and build rural economies by attracting more traveler spending.
Travel Nevada’s innovative Destination Development Design (3D) Project, now in its third round, will provide four months of expert consulting and ultimately award a share in a $1 million grant program funded through Nevada’s lodging tax revenue. The project is providing Sutro Tunnel and the larger Dayton community with a customized planning process to create a 10-year Destination Plan for the area. Once the plan is complete, the Friends of Sutro Tunnel will have a chance to apply for a portion of the funding to bring the concept to life.
